General

What is a hurdy-gurdy?

A hurdy-gurdy is a stringed musical instrument that produces sound by a hand-crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. It features a keyboard to change the pitch of the melody strings and includes drone strings and buzzing strings that produce a constant pitch.

How does a hurdy-gurdy work?

The player turns a crank attached to a wheel that rubs against the strings, similar to a violin bow. The keyboard presses tangents (small wedges) against the melody strings to change their pitch, while drone and buzzing strings provide a constant background pitch.

Where did the hurdy-gurdy originate?

The hurdy-gurdy has roots in medieval Europe, with early forms appearing in the 10th century. It evolved from the organistrum, a larger, more cumbersome instrument played by two people.

What types of music can you play on a hurdy-gurdy?

A: The hurdy-gurdy is versatile and used in various musical genres, including traditional folk music, medieval and Renaissance music, contemporary experimental music, and even rock and metal.

Playing the Hurdy-Gurdy

Is the hurdy-gurdy difficult to play?

The hurdy-gurdy has a medium learning curve due among other instruments to its unique mechanics and the need to coordinate the crank, keyboard, and rhythmic buzzing. However, with practice, it can be mastered like any other instrument.

What is the buzzing bridge?

A: The buzzing bridge, or "chien" (French for "dog"), is a small, movable bridge that creates a rhythmic buzzing sound when the wheel is turned quickly. This feature is used to add rhythmic accompaniment to the music.

How do you tune a hurdy-gurdy?

A: Tuning a hurdy-gurdy involves adjusting the pitch of the melody and drone strings. Each string is tuned using tuning pegs, similar to other stringed instruments. A digital chromatic tuner is a must for accurate tuning(phone apps will do fine).

Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and tuning, should be done frequently. More intensive maintenance, like string replacement and wheel care, should be done as needed, depending on usage.

How do I clean my hurdy-gurdy?

Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. For the wheel and strings, use a slightly damp cloth with a mild soap solution for cleaning. Be sure to dry immediately and thoroughly.

How do I apply rosin to the wheel?

Apply a small amount of rosin to the wheel using a clean cloth. Distribute the rosin evenly to ensure good friction between the wheel and strings.
