Introduction
The hurdy-gurdy is a unique and intricate musical instrument that requires some maintenance to ensure it remains in optimal playing condition. Proper care not only enhances the instrument's longevity but also ensures consistent sound quality. This guide provides detailed instructions on maintaining your hurdy-gurdy.
1. Regular Cleaning
1.1. External Cleaning
Dust Removal: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior of the hurdy-gurdy regularly to prevent dust buildup.
Resin Residue Removal: After many hours of playing, there will be resin residues on your sound board. Some players leave it, some players clean it. If you don't want those residues to stick to your soundboard, it would be best to clean it with pressure air after each session of playing. You don't need a pressure air machine. A rubber dust blower will do it fine.
Cleaning the Wood: Occasionally, use a slightly damp cloth with a mild soap solution to clean the wooden parts. Dry immediately with a soft cloth.
1.2. Internal Cleaning
Removing Dust: You can use compressed air to remove dust from internal components from the hole, around the wheel and strings.
Keybox Cleaning: Clean the keybox with a dry brush to remove dust and debris. Be careful not to dislodge any keys.
Key holes: 3d printed keys will not expand and shrink. But if it having difficulties somehow while moving after sometime for some reason or if you have wooden keys, you can first try dry or spray PTFE powder with face mask. Apply it to keyholes and try it again. If it again having difficulties, you can use a sanding file. Be sure to sand parallel and gentle each time.
2. String Maintenance
2.1. Checking for Wear and Tear
Visual Inspection: Regularly inspect the strings for signs of wear, fraying, or rust. Replace any damaged strings promptly.
Tuning: Ensure the strings are properly tuned. Use a digital tuner for accuracy. You can use TE TUNER app on your phones. You can find it on play store (Android) and app store (Apple). You can switch to just temperament on the upper left side. It is a paid app, which I find the work best. But there are other free alternatives that just makes the work done. Note: Please tune as just temperament, not equal temperament.
2.2. String Replacement
Procedure: Our instruments, melody strings has not regular string windings with pegs(counter clockwise). When replacing strings, while remove the old strings, please do not forget the way peg turns while removing, you will need to apply the new string same way. Then clean the nut and bridge slots, and carefully install the new string. Tune it to the correct pitch and allow it to settle before playing.
3. Wheel Care
3.1. Cleaning the Wheel
Rosin Residue: Clean the wheel when instrument is tuned perfectly but started to sound cat screamy. This might be also because of old strings. Rosin can build up buildup on the wheel with time. Use a soft cloth dampened with a small amount of rubbing( at least of %99.5 isoprophyl) alcohol. Wipe gently and let it dry completely.
Sanding: Occasionally, lightly sand the wheel with fine-grit(800-1000) sandpaper to maintain a smooth surface.
3.2. Rosining the Wheel
Application: Apply a small amount of sanded (with around 250 grit) rosin to the clean cloth and then press that cloth to wheel to maintain good friction with the strings. While applying, use pressure to the towel or cloth piece piece with left hand and with right hand, krank it hard and fast. That friction will melt the rosin. With clean cloth piece, evenly distribute the rosin.
4. Key Maintenance
4.1. Key Alignment
Checking: Ensure all keys are properly aligned and return to their resting position smoothly. Adjust if necessary.
Lubrication: Use a small amount of graphite powder, spray or powder PTFE or a specialized lubricant for wooden instruments on the key mechanism to ensure smooth operation.
5. Tangent Adjustment
Positioning: Check the positioning of the tangents regularly to ensure accurate intonation. Adjust as needed by loosening the tangent screw, repositioning it, and tightening the screw again. Both G3 and G4 tangents need to touch both strings at the same time.
Wear: Inspect tangents for wear and replace if necessary.
6. General Tips
Storage: Store your hurdy-gurdy in a cool, dry place. Use our soft case to protect it from physical damage. If your gurdy has 3d printed parts, it would be best to keep it away from direct sunlight. And never leave your gurdy over 32 degrees celsius (90 degrees fahrenheit), like in trunk of your car, in your tent or direct under sun especially in summer.
Humidity Control: If you have a fullly wooden instrument, maintain a consistent humidity level around 40-50% to prevent the wood from warping. Use a humidifier or dehumidifier as needed. If you have 3d printed base hurdy gurdy, you won't have much trouble with humidity as it won't expand or shrink that much.
Regular Playing: Play your hurdy-gurdy regularly to keep it in good working order. Instruments that are played frequently tend to stay in better condition.
Holding: Don't hold and carry your gurdy only from krank. Always use one hand from base and one hand from end of keybox with your 2 hands.
Conclusion
Maintaining a hurdy-gurdy requires attention to detail and regular care. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can ensure that your instrument remains in excellent condition, providing you with beautiful music for years to come.
