Which strings to use and tunings in Hurdy Gurdies

Drone Strings

Cello D (1/8 cello scale) : Drone C3 (Do 3 - 130.8 Hz)

Cello G (1/8 cello scale)   : Drone G2 (Sol 2 - 98.1 Hz)

 

Melody Strings

Viola G (4/4 viola scale) : Melody string G3 (Sol 3 - 196,2 Hz)

Viola A (4/4 viola scale)  : Melody string G4 (Sol 4 - 392.4 Hz)

 

Buzzing Strings (fluorocarbon strings)

1 mm                    : C4 (Do 4 - 264 Hz)

1.25 mm             : G3 (Sol 3 - 196,2 Hz)

 

Symphathetic Strings

First side

Thickest(0.32mm) : C4 ( Do – 261.6  Hz)

Thick (0.24mm) : D4 ( Sol -294.3 Hz)

Thin (0.20mm) : E4 ( Re – 327 Hz )

The thinnest (0.15mm) : G4 ( La – 392.4 Hz)


Second side

Thickest(0.32mm) : G3 ( La 3 – 197.8  Hz)

Thick (0.24mm) : Eb4 ( Sol -314.0 Hz)

Thin (0.20mm) : F4 ( Re – 348.8 Hz )

The thinnest (0.15mm ) : F#4 ( La – 372.5 Hz)

 

Capos for Drones

C3 (130.8 Hz) to D3 (147.2 Hz)

G2 (98.1 Hz) to A2 (109.0 Hz)

 

Capos for Buzzing Strings C4 (Do 4 - 264 Hz) to D4 (294.0 Hz)

G3 (Sol 3 - 196,2 Hz) to A3 (220.5 Hz)

 

You can use TE TUNER app on your phones. You can find it on play store (Android) and app store (Apple). You can switch to just temperament on the upper left side. It is a paid app, which I find the work best. But there are other free alternatives that just make the work done.

Note: Please tune as just temperament, not equal temperament and pick root note as C. This is important.
